At what age should your first eye exam happen?

Published on March 12, 2025 7 min read

For children

Optometrists recommend a first exam between 6 and 9 months, another around age 3, then yearly once school starts. In Quebec, RAMQ covers annual exams for kids under 18 (see our RAMQ guide).

A child won't always complain when they don't see well — they assume everyone sees the same. Watch for rubbing eyes, squinting, getting close to screens or avoiding reading.

For adults

Without particular history, every 1–2 years is enough. With glasses or contacts, an annual exam is recommended to adjust your prescription and monitor eye health. If your prescription changes, check out our 2-for-$200 or $300 promo.

For seniors

From age 65, RAMQ covers a yearly exam. Conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration or glaucoma develop silently — exams catch them early.

What an exam includes

  • Visual acuity (far and near)
  • Refraction analysis (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia)
  • Intraocular pressure check
  • Fundus examination
  • Color vision and binocular vision tests
